Job summary
Not exclusive:
B7 Senior Mental Health professional to be present in ED where possible to provide support / be a point of escalation on matters relating to mental health patients in the emergency dept.
- To carry a code 10 bleep on each shift and a rota basis.
- The allocation of the Code 10 bleep will be reflected on the staff off duty/rota.
- B7 is expected to make themselves known to the ED sister in Charge, RMNs and relevant departments at the start of their duty.
- B7 is required to remain / float around ED, be visible and be the point of reference for all matters relating to Mental Health patients in the department.
- B7 is expected to attend the ED huddles and to have an oversight on all Mental Health patients in the department,
- B7 is expected to provide advice to the RMNs/HCAs on how to support the mental health patients in the department.
- B7 is only expected to support the Liaison team in reviewing patients where possible but not to be involved in full psychiatric assessments.
- B7 is to attend all Liaison handovers as well as discuss any issues they are aware of in the emergency department.
- B7 is expected to make the clinical assessment unit (CAU) aware of all potential referrals so the CAU can be prepared to receive these patients.
- All referrals to the CAU by a Band 6 PLN are to be discussed with the B7; the B7 is then expected to contact CAU to make these referrals once the criteria for transfer to the CAU are met.
- All other duties as required by the service.
Main duties of the job
As part of national expansion of Liaison Mental Health services to ‘Core24’, we are pleased to offer an exciting innovative opportunity for the role of Senior Psychiatric Liaison Nurse to work in the acute trust emergency department and ward settings.Working as part of a dynamic Multi-Disciplinary Team, you will work at the interface between physical and mental health across inpatient hospital wards and in our Emergency Department. You will work with anyone over the age of 18 years presenting with mental health as well as physical health needs to both the emergency department and medical wards.We are looking for two dynamic and tenacious SNP practitioners who enjoy rapid assessment / crisis work and working with a diversity of clinical presentations.The role will be working as part of a multidisciplinary Mental Health Liaison Team to facilitate timely discharge and reduce multiple attendances of clients with complex mental health, physical health and social care needs. There will also be opportunities to teach both colleagues and acute trust staff / depts. as part of your SNP role.
You will also work in partnership with our newly opened clinical assessment unit (CAU) and you will be expected to support the unit as part of your SNP role.

Job responsibilities
- To allocate breaks (1 hr break to be taken between 9-5, 30 min break to be taken between 5-10pm) and ensure all staff take breaks2. Remind staff the 1 hr and 30 min break are not to be taken together3. To allocate and ensure AM bed list is circulated at the start of the AM shift4. To allocated someone to do the 11:00 and 15:30 bed call5. To be present and ready to handover for AM, PM, and Night shifts6. To ensure patients in the department who are awaiting admission have a timely review (i.e. PLN, SNP, Consultant, SpR)7. To be aware of and ensure all referrals are added to the spread sheet8. To ensure the band 7 on shift is aware of all referrals for triaging purposes 9. To ensure all referrals are allocated- be aware of breach times10. Team Leader will discuss any breaches with the shift coordinator11. Shift coordinator is to ensure they are made aware of assessment outcomes (i.e. senior reviews, HTT, admission, MHAA etc.) and ensure the assessing PLN/SNP/Dr has reflected this on the spread sheet12. If a patient is to be ARCed, referred to AMHP, etc. Shift coordinator is to check this has been done13. To keep an eye on the A&E dashboard and keep in mind any potential referrals14. To check in with NiC in A&E and check they are kept updated on all psych patients15. To check inpatient referrals on CERNER during out of hours16. To remind PLNs/Drs that entries/documentations are uploaded on both Cerner and EPJs17. To ensure any clinical or management issues are escalated to the SNP/team manager18. Shift Co-ordinator to ensure CERNER Laptops are signed in and out for each day and each time used.
MHLS Senior Nurse Practitioner role:
- To take part in surge / bed calls with external and internal senior managers.2. To ensure patients in the department who are awaiting admission have a timely review (i.e. PLN, SNP, Consultant, SpR3. To be responsible for ensuring at every shift all patient contacts have management plan documented on Acute Trust / SLaM Patient systems (Cerner & ePJS) before commencing a sit down of comprehensive history/clerking documentation.4. To check in with A&E Nurse in Charge to offer update on all MHLS patients in the department5. Be mindful of potential referrals from ED6. Triage new referrals and to act as the front door practitioner when on duty7. To support the shift coordinator to ensure the spreadsheet is kept updated8. To ensure all patients who require referral to be ARCed, referred to AMHP, etc has been done.9. To check inpatient referrals on CERNER during out of hours

Essential
- Registered Mental Health Nurse
- Evidence of other advanced education related to Psychiatric Liaison
- Mentorship ENB 998 or equivalent

Experience
Essential
- oSignificant post qualifying experience in mental health services with a sound knowledge of the full range of mental health services, both inpatient and community based.
- oA sound understanding and experience of how to assess and manage crisis within acute mental illness
- oMust be able to take an overview of the provision of mental health services and ensure service users’ needs are met appropriately
Desirable
- oExperience of working with specific diagnosis of Personality Disorder
